Lira Town is located approximately 110 kilometres Southeast of Gulu Town, on the highway between Gulu and Mbale and is approximately 270 Kms from Kampala City.

In 2011, Uganda Bureau of   Statistics (UBOS) estimated the mid-year population of the town at 108,600

Tourist attraction

  • Balonyo massacre grave is located 45 minutes from Lira Town; it is an area where 300 people killed by the Lord’s Resistance Army were buried.
  • Olwemy Swamp
  • It is a home of hills like Amor hills, Agwang hills, Ngetta hills, Adeko hills and Labwor hills.

Lira Airport
Lira Airport is the largest domestic civilian airport in Uganda.

Education Institutions
The town has a branch of Uganda Martyrs University.
