Senegal found in West Africa is officially known as The Republic of Senegal. Senegal is bordered to the north by Mauritania, to the east by the Republic of Mali, to the south by Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.Senegal is mainly a low-lying country, with a semi-desert area in the north and northeast and forests in the southwest.
Senegal covers a land area of 196,722 km2 where land is 192,530 km2 and water covers 4,192 km2. It has a 531 km coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean. The country has an estimated population of about 13 million people.
Senegal’s climate is pleasantly tropical with year round average temperatures between 26° and 30° C, uninterrupted sunshine from November to May and a short rainy season between the months of June and October. In Senegal there are high temperatures all year.
The Senegalese economy is primarily agricultural revolving around one cash crop, the peanut. The government is working to diversify both cash crops and subsistence agriculture.Fishing, phosphates, and tourism are now major sources of foreign exchange in Senegal.
The official language in Senegal is French.
