Population in Rwanda

Rwanda’s population is at 12 million as of Tuesday, December 13, 2016 and is expected to increase to 16 million by 2020 if the current growth rate of 3.2% per annum is maintained. The country’s population density is the highest in Africa averaging about 345 per sq km in 2000.

The information below is per the  fourth Population and Housing Census  2012:

Population of Rwanda: 12 014 174 persons

Females:   6 114 240 ( 50.9% of the total population)

Males :   5 899 936 (49.1% of the total population)

6o years and above :  511,738  ( 4.9% of the population)

Aged between 14 and 35 years:  4,166,777 ( 39.6 % of the total population)

Aged below 14 years: 5,837,458 ( 55.5% of the total population)

Average population growth: 3%

Urban population: 3,799,175 (30.8 % of the total population)

Urban population growth rate: 4.1%

Rural population: 8,728,108 (83% of the total population)

Rural population growth rate: 2.5%

Life expectancy:  64.5 % for both male and female (NISR 2012)

Infant mortality rate: 48.6 deaths/1,000 live births (2012 NISR)

Fertility rate 4.0 births per woman (  2012 NISR)
