Gambia Profile

The Gambia, officially known as the Republic of the Gambia is found in West Africa. The country is surrounded by Senegal except for strip of Atlantic coastline at its western end. It is the smallest country on mainland Africa. The Gambia is situated on either side of Gambia River.

It has a total land area of 11,295 square kilometers where land covers 10,000 square kilometers and water covers 1,295 square kilometers. The Gambia has an 80 kilometer of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 1,882,450 people according to the provisional 2012 population census results.

The Gambia is located midway between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator. It has an uninterrupted dry season from November to June and a rainy season from June to November. The average daytime temperature for the entire country is 32°C. In the evenings the temperature drops to around 16°C. Day time average temperatures range from 23 °C to 27 °C along the coast.

The official language of The Gambia is English.
