Transport system in Djibouti City

Djibouti is the capital and largest city in the Republic of Djibouti with a population of 500,000. Djibouti city is situated on the coast on the Gulf of Tadjoura right across from Yemen. The common means of public transport within the city are as follows:

Shared Taxis

Green taxi is abundant in Djibouti City and they are commonly used means of transport around the city.

Special Hire Taxis

There a number of vehicles privately owned which are available for rental.  It is advisable to negotiate the fare  with the driver before you start the journey.


Daily ferry services are available to and from the towns of Obock, Tadjoura and Djibouti City. There are also boat transfers from the Djibouti Port to the nearby Moucha Islands.


The train service in Djibouti is used on a small scale to and from Ethiopia
