King Mwambutsa IV Bangiricenge

King Mwambutsa IV Bangiricenge

King Mwambutsa IV Bangiricenge succeeded on the death of his father Mutaga IV Mbikije and he was enthroned king of Burundi at Muramvya, December 16, 1915.

On January 20, 1959, Burundi’s ruler Mwami Mwambutsa IV requested from the Belgian Minister of Colonies a separation of Burundi and Rwanda and dissolution of Ruanda-Urundi. Six months later, political parties were formed to bring attention to Burundi’s independence from Europe and to separate Rwanda from Burundi.

During the early part of his reign, Burundi was transferred from Germany to Belgium following World War I.

He was the king of Burundi when it was granted independence, 1 July 1962, and become an independent constitutional monarchy, which suffered much turmoil including the assassinations of at least three prime ministers

Burundi’s push for independence was influenced to some extent by the instability and ethnic persecution that occurred in Rwanda.
