Dairy authority
Dairy Development Authority is a statutory body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries created under the Dairy Industry Act of 1998 with a mandate to develop and regulate the dairy industry in a sustainable manner. The Authority’s tangible result is the investment drive and positioning of the dairy sector as a potential contributor to the economic development of Uganda.

Role of the authority
The role of the authority includes the following:

  • Registers dairy farmer’s groups
  • Supports marketing for the dairy farmers organizations
  • Helping in dairy extension development activities
  • Helps in dairy breeding research
  • Provides dairy training
  • Develops dairy products
  • General market promotion and promotion of export
  • Coordinates all dairy processing and marketing
  • Sets up promotional activities such as seminars
  • Holds trade fairs and workshops
  • Acts as an arbitrator in any conflict between companies and processors.
  • It’s also responsible for pooling dairy processing and marketing data.

Dairy animal population
Exotic and cross breed cattle constitute less than 20% of the cattle population of Uganda estimated at about 11.4 million cattle.  This sector produces around 60% of all milk in Uganda and about 40% of the milk comes from local breeds.

Milk Production
Uganda produces about 721,000 litres of milk per day of which only 20% is processed the remaining bulk is utilized unprocessed. The milk production by region is as follows:

  • South western25%
  • Central 24%
  • Eastern21%
  • Mid western 12%
  • Northern 11%
  • Karamonja 7%

Market Analysis
There is a high demand for dairy products in urban centres of Uganda and hotels, schools, hospitals and dairy processing industries.
Export of live heifers
Uganda has of recent been exporting a number of live heifers and bulls to neighbouring countries which has consequently led to decline in the milk production.
