Kigoma is located on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika and close to the border with Burundi. It serves as the commercial and administration centre for the surrounding Kigoma Region. It is one of the busiest ports on Lake Tanganyika and is connected to the interior and Dar es Salaam by rail and road network.
