Maize

The maize which was introduced in Rwanda in 1960 has been identified as a priority stable crop by the Government of Rwanda within the context of the National Crop Intensification Programme.  In addition the maize has the potential for export.

  • Ngoma

Production and uses of maize

Rwanda produces between 167,000 and 285,505 metric tons of maize.

Uses of maize

The uses of maize include the following:

  • Maize plays an important role in food security.
  • Maize contributes to poverty reduction.
  • Used in the production of animal, poultry and fish feed.
  • Maize production can be competitive with imports.
  • It is a good crop for fighting hunger as it is easier to store.

 Challenges in growing

The following are the challenges facing the maize farmers:

  • There is low application of modern agriculture inputs such as fertilizers to maize plantations.
  • Maize production is constrained by low public and private investment in terms of infrastructure.
  • Lack of well trained agriculture experts to advice farmers on methods of farming to improve on maize production.
  • The quantities produced are still low.
  • Inadequate research on ways of growing maize.
