Urban Population and population growth rates
Rwanda is among the most densely populated countries in Africa – increasing steadily to 400 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2012, as compared with 395 in 2010, 321 in 2002, 283 in 1991, and 191 in 1978. The population is predominantly young, with 42.3 % of all Rwandans under the age of 15.
Rwanda is one of Africa’s most rapidly urbanizing countries, with a population base of 12 million, a high population growth rate of 4.48 percent and a high rate of urban growth estimated at 5.1 percent per annum and total urbanization rate of15% of the total population.
It is projected that by the year 2040 Rwanda’s population will have grown to 27 million, the urban population has been growing at the rate of at least 4.4% per annum.
Rwanda has one capital city being Kigali City and 8 major towns with over 16 small to medium size cities.
The capital Kigali City is under the administration of Kigali City Council (KCC) and towns are administered by local government and the relevant town council authorities.
